The journey is

Bamfield sits at the end of the road. Drive in, sail the inlet, or fly low over the sound — pick your adventure below and watch the route draw itself.
Port Alberni → Bamfield 90 km · about 1 hr 40 min
It is highly recommended to take this route regardless of your starting point — whether you're coming from Victoria, Duncan, Sooke, or anywhere else on the island. Fully chip-sealed and well maintained all the way in.
- Fill up in Port Alberni — it is truly the last gas stop before Bamfield.
- Yellow km markers count you down the whole way.
- Logging trucks have right of way — keep lights on and slow for one-lane bridges.
Lake Cowichan / Youbou Logging Road via south shore · about 2 hr 30 min
Highly not recommended unless you are very familiar with it.
Highway 18 is paved from Lake Cowichan to the Youbou area. From Youbou onward it is an active industrial logging road — very rough, speeds as low as 10–20 km/h, no maintenance schedule. Not suitable for RVs, campers, trailers, or any first-time visitors.
- Start from Lake Cowichan on Highway 18 — not from South side of Lake Cowichan.
- Fuel up in Lake Cowichan, or at Youbou's Daly's Auto Centre (limited hours) — the last fuel before the logging road.
- The road is chip-sealed again around km 34 (the markers count up from Port Alberni, not Bamfield), but the middle section is rough logging road.
Port Renfrew — Safer Route via Lake Cowichan + Port Alberni · about 3 hr 15 min
If you are starting from the Jordan River / Port Renfrew area, take this route.
There are several ways to reach Bamfield from Port Renfrew, but this is the only one that is all chip-seal or pavement — every other option runs on active logging roads.
Head north to Lake Cowichan — the road from Port Renfrew to Lake Cowichan is chip-sealed, a smaller winding forest road. From Lake Cowichan continue to North Cowichan and Highway 1, then up to Port Alberni and take the chip-seal road in. This saves time versus doubling back to Victoria.
- Port Renfrew → Lake Cowichan: chip-sealed, winding forest road — safe but takes about 50 min.
- Lake Cowichan → Hwy 1 → Port Alberni → Bamfield: all chip-sealed or paved highway from here.
- Do not turn off toward Youbou — stay on the highway north to Port Alberni.

A working packet freighter that's been threading the Alberni Inlet for decades — half ferry, half postal run, all west coast. Sails Tue, Thu, Sat (plus summer extras). Get off at the East dock for the park.
